I came back to my apartment (330 E39th in Murray Hill) one evening and there were several fire engines lined up on the street but no sign of fire or smoke anywhere so I went into my building and lined up to get on the busy elevator. I chatted with my friendly doorman(Fred was his name I believe)as I was waiting in line and I noticed you standing in front of me and saying hello to Fred too. We made one or two eye contacts and I was quite happy to have gotten on the same elevator as you. There were two other asian girls on it, and they were wondering why the fire trucks were outside. Thatās when you suddenly said something like āO sorry about that, it was usā and looked right at me and waited for me to speak my line and I blurted out something like āO yea sorry! I really wanted some chocolate chip cookies tonight but forgot to take them out of the oven on time, oops!ā now for someone who was so quick to go along with that spontaneous comment I donāt know why I didnāt get off that elevator on your floor with you and stayed on til I got to my 33rd floor with two very confused asian girls staring at me. I tried to find out about you from Fred the next day but no luck was there. Now I donāt know what the point is to even write this after all these years but I always wondered what wouldāve happened had I followed you off on your floor. Itās been so long that my memory of that evening is a bit distorted perhaps but I remember the feeling. I think you were quite tall clean cut caucasian with a gym bag? Maybe? Iām the short Korean girl who was too slow to catch your intention that evening who finds herself wondering about that evening time to time. Itās a very long shot but I still wanted to submit it, itās a good story I think and even if it stays as a missed connection Iāll still treasure it.
